From Wikipedia:

Tafoni (singular: tafone) are cavities that develop in granular rock.

Although there are various definitions in the scientific literature, tafoni are commonly defined as small (less than 1 cm (0.39 in)) to large (greater than 1 meter (3.3 ft)) cavity features that develop in either natural or manmade, vertical to steeply sloping, exposures of granular rock (i.e., granite, sandstone) with smooth concave walls, and often round rims and openings. Recognized subcategories of tafoni include honeycombstonelacealveolar (less than 2 cm (0.79 in)), sidewallbasalnested, and relic tafoni. It is also commonly synonymous with nido d’ape roccioso in Italian.

The etymology of the word tafoni is unclear. Tafoni may come from the Greek word taphostomb, or it may stem from a Corsican or Sicilian word for holestaffoni, or from tafonare meaning to perforate. The earliest known publication of the term tafoni was in 1882

One of my favourite places in this world is Clayton Beach along the Chuckanut shore. At low tide you can wander far down the beach and observe the most amazing sculptural rock formations with overhanging Conifer and Madrona trees. These two new paintings along with many others were inspired by wandering this beach. One of my favourite painting studies is of Madrona trees of which there are many in Larrabee State park. These paintings are now hanging in Chuckanut Bay Gallery, 700 Chuckanut Drive North, Bellingham, WA. https://chuckanutbaygallery.com/?srsltid=AfmBOop_0FglCyhN8plOewLvtXF4djBrCG-kgHbkhuqYYovefHYBJxwH

One of my life drawing studies has been accepted into “Double Exposure” at Voxel Gallery in Bellingham. https://www.voxelgallery.com/. Drawing or painting from a live model is a different experience from the solitary practise in the studio. For me its very meditative as it requires focused attention on the subject matter, the slightest mark can change the expression and intention of the model. Working in a room with other artists is also welcome alternative to my usual studio routine. This exhibit opens Friday February 6 and promises to share some of the regions finest figurative art.
